The Boston Big Game Fishing Club Kite is a formidable tool for anglers targeting large fish, and it has a reputation for being one of the best in New England. Its exceptional stability comes from a unique windsock below the kite that features a mesh end, which allows some wind to pass through while still providing enough resistance to keep it steady.
Adjusting the kite's direction is simple: just move the center knot a quarter-inch to the left or right to make it fly in that direction. To make this easier, it's a good idea to mark the original center point on the line.
The kite performs well in a wide range of conditions, flying in winds from 5 to 20 miles per hour, whether wet or dry. In lighter winds, you'll find that the kite becomes more stable the higher it flies, as it reaches more consistent air currents. For these light wind days, using Spectra line is a great choice because its thinner diameter offers less wind resistance than thicker monofilament.
Conversely, on windy days, you can make the kite fly further behind your boat by using heavier monofilament line, such as 100 to 200 lb. You can also attach a large flag (3x5 feet) with standard flag clips to the main kite line, about 40-60 feet below the kite. The flag's extra wind drag helps the kite stay downwind.
This powerful kite is not for the inexperienced. It’s crucial to use a minimum of 80 lb. main line and to secure your rod and reel with a safety leash. There are even stories of rods and reels being launched into orbit when attached to this kite! When you’re done for the day, the kite breaks down easily and can be stored inside its own windsock.
